One of the best kept secrets in the Caribbean has always been Port Antonio, a tropical Eden and the jewel in Jamaica’s crown. Portland offers visitors unparalleled natural beauty – rugged, exciting coastlines, romantic beaches, hidden coves, rivers, and waterfalls with the Blue Mountain range providing a spectacular backdrop. Port Antonio, as the capital of Portland, has retained its charm as a quiet rural township and is home to one of the most beautiful harbours in the Caribbean.

Rafting

Rafting on the Rio Grande where river rafting started in Jamaica. The rafts glide serenely down river on this romantic two-hour trip.

Nonesuch Caves are situated four and a half miles to the east of Port Antonio on a property known as The Seven Hills of Athenry. Dicovered in the 30′s, the caves make a fascinating tour.

Valley Hikes offers organized hikes in the Rio Grande Valley with professional guides. All trails have been chosen for their unusual beauty.

Blue Lagoon is seven miles east of Port Antonio, surrounded by steep hillsides and dense green vegetation. Some claim it to be “bottomless”, but experts proclaim it to be about 185 feet at its deepest point. There is an excellent restaurant and non-motorized water sports.

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

The Parish of St. Ann on the north coast, is known as the “garden parish” because of its great beauty. Its parish capital is the market town of St. Ann’s Bay. The resort development of this delightful parish, however, has centered round the town of Ocho Rios.

The name Ocho Rios, literally translated from the Spanish, means “Eight Rivers” but it could be a corruption of Las Chorreras – the waterfalls, because waterfalls are perhaps the most striking feature of the area.

Dunn’s River Falls

One of the most popular attractions in Jamaica is Dunn’s River Falls, a 15-minute drive west of Ocho Rios. You can climb the natural steps to the top of the 600-ft/180-m tiered waterfall or just gaze at the falls from a viewing platform. The falls can be slippery-wear a swimsuit and tennis shoes or swim socks. The safest way to climb is with a guide who will take you by the hand and lead you up the tiered falls and into some small caves. There’s a nice beach for swimming and sunning where the river empties into the Caribbean. The jungle setting is gorgeous, but the area is highly commercialized. At the top of the falls is a village full of crafts shops, T-shirt stands and hair-braiding kiosks.

Fern Gully

Visit Fern Gully, typical of a rain forest. See the protusion of tropical ferns (over 500 species). Tower Cloisters, an intimate apartment complex located just outside Ocho Rios, is ideal for couples and families looking for a relaxing holiday with choice of restaurant or self catering facility.

Chukka Cove

Situated about 15 minutes from Ocho Rios, just beyond St. Ann’s Bay on the way to Montego Bay, Chukka Cove is a farm and stable which offers rides to suit anyone, from beginners to the most experienced. Their beach ride takes you through a dairy and cattle farm to the beach where an exhilarating ride through the waves will get your adrenaline flowing. They have recently added an exciting new attraction… a bike ride through the spectacular scenery of the Jamaican mountains down to a white sand beach and a refreshing plunge into the clear blue sea. Safari Tours. Zebra-striped jeeps will take you to White River for a breathtaking river tubing ride or on a hiking trip tyhrough the hills and down to Dunn’s River Falls or through the timeless, unhurried, Jamaica countriside, seldom seen by visitors. Dolphin Cove

Prospect Plantation Tour

One of the oldest-established plantation tours the island has to offer. It is a still a working plantation which grows a little of everything so you will see such tropical produce as sugar cane, banana, cassava, avocado, and pimento (allspice) in their own habitat. A herb garden is a new addition. Peacocks roam the property and a horseback tour instead of a jitney tour is an option for the more energetic. Trail bikes tours are yet another possibility and there is minature golf for those who cannot bear to be far from a golf course..

Negril Scuba Centre located at Mariner’s Negril Beach Club will introduce you to the wonders of the Jamaican deep with courses for beginners as well as more advanced divers.

Light House

Perhaps the most distinctive landmark in Negril. Built in 1894, it was originally operated by kerosene.

Rhodes Hall

For horseback riding, expert guides will ensure your mount is right for you whether you are a novice or an experienced rider. A two-hour ride takes you through banana and coconut groves and high into the hills. Crocodile watching is a highlight of the tour. Climax is an exhilarating gallop, or trot, or walk, along the beach, according to desire or ability. Rhodes Hall offers air conditioned seaside villas with fully-equipped kitchens.

Watersports

The Negril Yacht Club, located on the Lighthouse Road in Negril is the single-stop location for watersports. It offers kayak and snorkel rentals with some of the best snorkeling in town. Daily sunset and nude cruises are available as well as water taxi to the beach and glass bottom boat tours. Deep sea fishing charters run from the Yacht Club as well.

Montego Bay

Montego Bay is Jamaica’s second city in size and importance, but it is the island’s tourism capital. It boasts the most hotel accommodation, the most transport facilities and is, in fact, a cosmopolitan holiday centre, offering a wide choice of amenities. Montego Bay is divided into three fairly distinct parts. There is the city itself with its crowded streets. There is the “hotel area” which is the mile-and-a-half strip running from the town, past the celebrated Doctor’s Cave Beach and out to the Dead End Bar. Thirdly, there are the outlying hotels and villas on beach or hillside.

Shopping

Part of the pleasure of a vacation is buying souvenirs or simply splurging out on something you have always wanted. Jamaica offers the necessary temptations.

City Centre Plaza in Montego Bay is a plaza devoted almost entirely to in-bond stores but you will find others in the Holiday Village and Half Moon Shopping Village, in larger hotels and at Montego Bay Plaza on the waterfront. Be sure to bargain in these stores – it is expected.

The main Crafts Market is on Harbour Street in town but there are two smaller ones in the hotel area, one next to Fantasy Hotel and another on Fort Street on the site of a 17th century fort.

Art Galleries

A visit to Lester Art Gallery in the hills above Reading can also be a tour in itself or can be combined with visits to other places of interest. The Gallery is devoted to works of Polish sea captain and painter the late Michael Leszczynski, who anglicised his name to Lester and is famous for the work of his Jamaica period. The gallery is at his former home and studio which he built in the 1950s on a cliffside at the village of Belmont.

Aquasol Theme Park

Situated on the dazzling white sand Walter Fletcher beach, this theme park offers enough entertainment to keep you busy all day.

Montego Bay Underseas Tours

The “Coral See” looks a bit like a submarine but it is really a boat with an air conditioned underwater viewing compartment six feet under the surface where you an sit in comfort and watch the wonders of the Montego Bay Marine Park.

Belvedere Estate

Belvedere is a family-owned estate set on one thousand acres of land just minutes away from Montego Bay. It was one of the first sugar cane plantations in Jamaica and is still a working estate.

Bird Sanctuary

A visit to Rocklands Feeding Station in Anchovy, only minutes away from Montego Bay, is a must for all bird lovers and bird watchers.

Bob Marley Experience and Theatre

Situated in the Half Moon Shopping Village. Shows every hour on the hour is a touching tribute to Bob Marley. This tastefully produced documentary film is a must for all lovers of his music and for those who have never had the pleasure of watching Bob Marley in concert.

Caribbean Beach Park

Situated at Ironshore, this newly opened facility is the perfect spot for family fun, with lots of beach activities and lifeguards certified for CPR. An ttractive restaurant, bar and ice cream parlour are among the services provided.

Caribbean Showplace

This entertainment Centre at Ironshore offers a games room, two restaurants and a “state of the art” nightclub with two bars cater to every taste.

Chukka Blue Adventure Tours

Situated at Blue Hole, Sandy Bay, this company offers a horseback-riding tour through an ancient sugar estate. The tour meanders for two and a half hours through the picturesque Jamaican landscape and finishes with a dip in the sea (horse and all).
They also offer an exciting bike tour through the cool hills of Hanover down to the beach.

Coral Cliff Gaming/ Entertainment Lounge

A flashing neon sign is the GO signal for the “Hip Strip’s” best seven nights of live entertainment. From live jazz to fabulous fashion shows, cabaret or vintage reggae, it is exciting, entertaining and exhilarating. Coral Cliff, Montego Bay’s gaming lounge, is a haven for conservative and adventurous players alike.

Tryall Golf Club

The Tryall resort sits in a beautiful 2,200 acre estate with sweeping vistas down to the incredibly blue Caribbean sea. The 72 par 18 hole golf course here is word-famous.

Rose Hall Beach Club

They call themselves the watersports capital of Jamaica and with great reason. Name any watersport and they have it – waterskiing, wave runners, para sailing, ayaking, diving, fishing, snorkelling, hydrospeeding. The list goes on. If you are a watersports fan or would like to learn any of the above. this place is a must.

Rose Hall Great House

This is without doubt the most celebrated Great House in Jamaica. It was once the home of the notoriously wicked Annie Palmer, the White Witch of Rose Hall, who murdered three husbands and terrorized her slaves. U.S. entrepreneurs, John and Michele Rollins, restored it to its original glory, complete with furnishings from the same time period. Charming Jamaican hostesses will chill your blood with tales of the evil Annie. A refreshing walk in the beautiful gardens will restore your equilibrium – or should you need stronger sustenance you can find it in Annie’s Pub in the dungeon of the Great House.

South Coast in Jamaica

Mandeville

Mandeville, principal town of the parish of Manchester, is a quiet, restful mountain resort, a little over 2,000 feet above sea level with a cool climate (70-75 degrees by day, 65-70 degrees by night) ideal for such pursuits as golf, walking and horseback riding.
The town is often likened to an English village and certainly boasts a village green, handsome stone buildings and stone-walled pastures.

Bamboo Avenue

Bamboo Avenue at Lacovia is a well-known attraction where the road is lined for miles with tall bamboo which meets overhead like a vaulted cathedral roof.

Lover’s Leap

Lover’s Leap is another remarkable beauty spot where a sheer cliff, 1,600 feet high, overhangs the sea.

Treasure Beach

Treasure Beach not so long ago, was known only to Jamaicans and a very few privileged visitors. Now, a few more people have heard the secret. The natural peace and tranquility has not yet been spoiled and the warmth and hospitality of the people will touch your hearts.

Black River

Black River is Jamaica’s largest river. Nature lovers will delight in exploring what it has to offer. Boat trips are available. The YS Falls on the river are held by some to be the island’s most spectacular.

Middle Quarters

At the quaintly-named village of Middle Quarters, basket-carrying women will come to your car crying,”Shrim, Shrim, Shrim”. They are selling succulent cooked and peppered shrimps caught in nearby Black River.

For those who wish to thoroughly explore the island, the following trips will add excitement to the visit.

Apple Valley Nature Park

Located in the town of Maggotty, you can fish, hike and paddle your own canoe in this park.

Milk River Baths

A 30-minute drive from Mandeville, these mineral baths are said to be highly restorative.

YS Falls

Situated on an estate of the same name, these cataracts are among the most spectacular in Jamaica. There are eight of them, falling a breathtaking 120 feet in majestic tiers.

Diving

There can be no finer place in the world for diving than Jamaica with its crystal clear waters and its tropical reefs, abundant with sea-life. You don’t have to be an expert to enjoy this experience. A one-day diving course will give you enough basic skills for a shallow dive – and that’s all it will take to get you “hooked”.

Fishing

Jamaica is also for deep sea, big-game fishermen. Blue marlin, dolphin, tuna, kingfish and wahoo await the challenge. Port Antonio is particularly well-known for this sport.

Kingston, Jamaica

Kingston

Kingston, Jamaica’s capital, lies on the fertile plains of Liguanea (pronounced Lig-a-nee – an ancient Arawak Indian name) between the cays and banks of the eastern coast and the towering Blue Mountains. In this picturesque setting has grown a city of over half a million people: a bustling, sprawling city which is a place of deep and striking contrasts.

Kingston is not the sort of resort paradise to be found on the north coast but it offers a great deal more to the traveller who seeks to gain more than a sun tan from a holiday in Jamaica.

Blue Mountains

Visitors should not miss the rewarding drive into the Blue Mountains, home of Jamaica’s famous coffee.

Mavis Bank

Mavis Bank, a coffee farm high up in the Blue Mountains, invites visitors to come and see how the world famous Blue Mountain Coffee is grown and processed.

The National Art Gallery

The National Art Galleryon Ocean Boulevard, has a large collection of works of Jamaican artists.

Lime Cay

Morgan’s Harbour Hotel at Port Royal offers an excellent trip out to the offshore island of Lime Cay, a favourite spot of local yachtsmen. The white sand beach and clear water that abounds with fish make skin diving and swimming memorable.

Port Royal

Most of the old city of Port Royal, once the pirate capital of the New World, sank beneath the waves in a violent earthquake in 1692. Over the years much excavation work has been done to recover artifacts from this rich, but wicked town. Fort Charles, where Lord Nelson once strode the quarterdeck, still stands and the silent cannon still keep watch from its battlements. The Maritime Museum is located in Fort Charles itself while the Port Royal Archaeological and Historical Museum, which houses artifacts salvaged from the sunken city, is situated in the old Naval Hospital.
