Green Grotto Jamaica

Green Grotto Caves

Green Grotto CaveNamed for the green algae that cover its walls, the Green Grotto Caves is one of the most prominent tourist attractions in St. Ann. In touring the cave, you will be sure to see majestic stalactites, stalagmites, and other exquisite dripstone formations. The innermost cavern contains a crystal-clear underground lake, while on the outside, you can throw a coin and make a wish in the wishing well.

The caverns are home to bats and marine life, and over the centuries they’ve been a hideout for fugitives and runaway slaves.

Hidden away in an inner cavern is the crystal-clear Grotto Lake. Overhead, pockets in the limestone provide filtered light through the caverns’ forest of stalactites and stalagmites.

Swimming here is often a highlight of an excursion, as you get to paddle around in water that is shimmering in shades of bright blue all around you.

The Green Grotto Caves are on Jamaica’s north coast at Discovery Bay, west of Ocho Rios. They are 1.5 miles (3 kilometers) from Discovery Bay. To visit, you need to take an organized tour.
